Shedding Season Survival Tips

March 15, 2023

Spring is just around the corner! Many people are looking forward to stashing away their winter gear and pulling summer clothes and items out of storage. Of course, your pet will also be switching gears over the next month or so, and changing into their summer coats. We all know what that means: fur everywhere. An Apple Valley, MN vet offers some advice on getting through Fido and Fluffy’s wardrobe change in this article.

Brush It Out

The best way to keep your home, clothing, and belongings from getting covered in fur? Brush Fido or Fluffy regularly. That way, you can capture that dead hair with a brush before it ends up all over, well, everything. Just be sure to use the right type of brush.

Furniture

Dish gloves, damp sponges, and squeegees are all good at de-furring upholstery. Slip covers also protect upholstery from fur, dust, and dander. Many also look nice! Even if you don’t want to keep yours out all year, this is the time to use them. Opt for things that are easy to throw into the wash. Speaking of wash, we also recommend washing pets’ bedding more than usual in spring.

Vacuum Regularly

When it comes to fur busting, the vacuum may very well be your best friend. Try to make a habit of getting the high traffic areas and your pet’s hangout spots daily. About once a week or so, go in for a more thorough cleaning. You may even want to get a Roomba.

Change Air Filters

Has it been a while since you changed out your air filters? If so, put that on your to-do list for the week. The clean air will benefit both you and your four-legged buddy.

De-Fur Yourself

It’s not a bad idea to pick up some extra lint rollers at this time of year. Keep them in your car, at your work, and in various spots around the house. You may also want to choose clothes that won’t really trap and attract fur. Some good options are silk, satin, denim, linen, suede, and leather. If you want to quickly get fur off a piece of clothing, toss it into the dryer with a wet facecloth for a few minutes.
