Fall Dog Care: To-Do List

September 15, 2022
Believe it or not, fall is officially upon us. Whether you are excited for winter sports, or are already counting down the days to spring, you’ll probably have some extra chores on your plate at this time of year. Don’t forget about Fido! An Apple Valley, MN vet lists a few things to put on your to-do list in this article.

Check Gear

Does Fido have thin fur? If so, he probably needs sweaters and jackets for winter. Make sure your canine pal’s things are clean, free of rips and tears, and still fit him comfortably. We recommend having at least two different ‘outfits.’ That way, your furry pal will always have something to wear if one is in the wash.

Clean Bedding

Fido often sleeps more than usual when it’s cold or dreary out. He should have a warm, comfy bed to snuggle up in on those frigid nights. The bed should be thick enough to insulate him from chilly floors as he is dreaming of squirrels and bacon.

Walking Gear

It’s time to put summer things away and pull winter stuff out of storage. You may want to designate a specific jacket for walking Fido. Ideally, this should be something light or reflective, so drivers can see you. Keep the pockets filled with things you may need, such as treats, waste baggies, spare keys, and personal safety devices. You’ll also need shoes or boots with good tread.

Veterinary Care

Fido still needs protection from fleas, ticks, and disease, even in winter. You may also want to touch base with your vet about your canine buddy’s dietary needs. Some pooches need bigger portions when it gets cold. Others will benefit from supplements.

Paw Protection

In winter, snow, salt, sand, ice, and chemical ice-melting products can all do a number on Fido’s furry feet. Some of these products are also dangerous: Fido could ingest toxins just by licking his paws after walking across a sidewalk that was recently treated with chemical de-icers. Enjoy The Weather!

Winter is coming, but we still have some beautiful days ahead of us. Enjoy some of that beautiful fall weather! Taking Fido to a pretty park or trail is a great way to make the most of autumn. Is your canine companion overdue for an exam? Contact us, your Apple Valley, MN animal clinic!
