Senior Cat Care

September 1, 2022
Cats may very well be the purrfect pets. Fluffy is not only absolutely adorable, she’s also very fun and lovable. Your feline pal may be at her most charming as a kitten, but she’ll never stop charming you. Of course, your furball’s needs will change as she ages. When your pet reaches her golden years, she’ll need a little extra TLC. An Apple Valley MN vet offers some senior kitty care tips below.

Make Your Home Senior-Friendly

Take a look around your place, and see what you can do to make it comfier for Fluffy. Is her litterbox on the second floor? Keep a spare one on the ground floor, so she won’t have to use the stairs as much. Senior-friendly litterboxes, nightlights, and pet fountains are other small touches that can help make things easier for your furry friend.

Provide Comfy Spots

Fluffy will spend her retirement the same way she spent most of her youth: napping. Make sure your feline friend has plenty of comfy beds to curl up in. Put these in spots that are easy for her to access, so she doesn’t have to jump or climb far to reach them.

Brush Your Pet

Kitties are very good at grooming themselves. However, Fluffy may have trouble with this as she gets older. You may notice her fur starting to look a bit unkempt. Brushing her regularly will reduce shedding; remove dead fur, knots, and tangles; and just keep your furry buddy comfy. It’s also good for her circulation! (Tip: use this time to gently check your cat’s body condition.)

Take Time To Play

Fluffy will always enjoy letting her inner lioness out: She may just tap out faster than she did as a kitten. Taking a few minutes a day to play with your feline buddy will benefit her both mentally and physically. It’s also a cute way to make her feel loved, and add some fun and structure to her day.

Offer Good Food

Your vet will advise you as to when to make the switch to senior-formula food. Fluffy may get a bit meowpulative, but don’t be tricked into overfeeding her. This can lead to obesity. Your furball will be much healthier at or near her ideal weight! Please contact us, your Apple Valley, MN animal clinic, anytime. We’re dedicated to helping you keep your furry companion happy, healthy, and purring!
