Camping With Your Canine Buddy

Do you enjoy camping? If your summer plans include spending some time in the Great Outdoors, it’s probably safe to say that your canine buddy would be thrilled to accompany you. Spending time with close friends or family around a campfire beneath open sky can make for a pretty perfect night. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. Packing

You’ll need to pack a doggy bag. Fido will need food, treats, a few toys, bedding, towels, dishes, and a spare leash or tie-out line. We also strongly advise bringing a pet first-aid kit.

Preparation

Fido could come across all sorts of parasites and critters on a camping trip. Make sure he is current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Your furry friend should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags. A waterproof GPS collar isn’t a bad thing to get, either. Just do some research before you buy one, as these products do vary with things like range and battery  life.  

Water

Keeping your canine companion properly hydrated becomes absolutely critical in summer. Don’t let your pooch drink from rivers and streams, as the water could be contaminated. Standing water, such as ponds and puddles, are a definite no-no. Bring or treat Fido’s water. You’ll also need to be aware of blue-green algae. This tends to be a hazard in shallow bodies of water that stay warm in summer. Keep in mind that, while some blooms may be easy to see (and smell), sometimes contaminated lakes look fine.

Hazards

Campsites present a few very specific hazards. Coals and hot ashes are one concern: you don’t want your furry pal stepping into the remains of last night’s fire and burning his paws! Fido may also be tempted to dig through the trash, which could contain things like bones, can lids, or skewers.

Training

You don’t necessarily have to teach Fido to fetch your slippers, but he should know basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come. This is critical when camping, as it can keep your four-legged friend  from approaching a dangerous area or running off after that rabbit or squirrel he spotted.
