DIY Pet Furniture

March 1, 2023

Do you enjoy making things? If so, you may want to try your hand at making your pet some furniture. While Fluffy and Fido don’t mind using our things, it’s good for them to have some pieces of their own. An Apple Valley, MN vet lists a few great DIY projects below.

Beds

All of our animal friends love comfy beds, and who can blame them? You can upcycle wooden crates, hatboxes, hard-shell suitcases, or even dresser drawers to make beds for smaller pets. You can use paint or varnish to make it look nice, and match it to your décor. For larger pups, you can repurpose a big tire or a four-legged table turned upside down. Just add paint and comfy bedding. Done!

Cat Towers

There are several options for making cat towers. You can repurpose an old stepladder or bookshelf. If you’re feeling a bit braver, you can also start from scratch, using PVC pipe, lumber, or even a real tree branch. Add some smooth planks or boards to the shelves to even them out. Then, wrap the whole thing in sisal rope or carpet, and tell Fluffy to stay off it.

Catwalks

Our feline pals love high places, so it’s only natural that they enjoy scaling shelves, bookcases, and, of course, cat towers. Why not make Fluffy her own little kitty walk? This can be as simple as putting some sturdy shelves up. Or, if you really want to pamper your pet, you can install something that goes all the way around the house.

Pet Tents

Many smaller animals feel safe and secure in enclosed areas. You can make your furry friend a little tent out of an old tee shirt and a wire hanger. Or, you can make a tee-pee out of things you can get at any craft store.

Doghouses

Do you have a yard for your canine buddy to run around in? A doghouse is another great DIY project. You can find various plans online. Have fun with it! Fido may enjoy a rooftop ‘petio’ or a little deck. Just be careful when choosing the materials. Don’t use pressure-treated wood: the chemicals used to make it are not safe for your pooch.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions about your pet’s health or care. As your local Apple Valley, MN animal clinic, we are always happy to help!
