Puppy Care Mistakes

February 15, 2023

Have you recently adopted a puppy? Congratulations! You’re starting out on a long journey of fun and friendship with your new buddy. Of course, that first year is an absolutely critical time. You’ve got a lot of pet parenting to do in those first few months! An Apple Valley, MN vet lists some common puppy care mistakes in this article.

Not Puppyproofing

Litlte Fido is going to want to investigate everything in his new domain, and see what he can and can’t eat or chew on. This can be very dangerous! Many common household items pose a severe choking risk, and/or can potentially get lodged in your furry buddy’s throat or intestinal tract. Make sure your home is safe for your furry friend.

Delaying Veterinary Care

Your canine pal will need to visit his doctor several times in that first year. Your pooch will need to be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and given a full set of screenings. Vaccines and parasite control should also be on the agenda. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Lack Of Socialization

Socialization is absolutely crucial to our canine companions. If little Fido isn’t exposed to new places and faces now, while he’s young, he could grow up to be wary of new places and faces. In fact, lack of socialization is often linked to fearful and aggressive behavior. Doggy daycare, puppy parties, and even trips to parks can all help. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Punishment

Little Fido will grow up to be a very good boy, but he needs some guidance on the way. In the meantime, your little buddy may very well do something naughty, whether it’s chewing inappropriately or soiling the rug. Don’t punish your pooch: he won’t understand why you’re mad. Focus on rewarding positive behavior.

Training Delays/Issues

It’s never too soon to start teaching little Fido the ins and outs of being a good dog. House training and crate training can start as soon as you bring him home.

Lack Of Stimulation

Puppies are super playful and curious, which is one reason they bring so much joy to our lives. Spend lots of time with little Fido! Walks, attention, and playtime are all important. Also, make sure he has plenty of suitable chew toys.
